Autism Spectrum Disorder
Ornitz, suggested that Autism is a problem of sensory registration, sensory motor modulation and sensory integration.

Autism is a developmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two-and-a-half years of life.

Less severe ASD children may be diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) or with Asperser's Syndrome (these children typically have normal speech, but they have many "autistic" social and behavioral problems).

Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviours, which are markedly different from those of typical children.

Autistic children has very complex Sensory Issues
Many autistic individuals seem to have impairment in one or more of their senses. This impairment can involve the auditory, visual, tactile, taste, vestibular, olfactory (smell), and proprioceptive senses. These senses may be hypersensitive, hyposensitize, or may result in the person experiencing interference such as in the case of tinnitus, (a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears). As a result, it may be difficult for individuals with autism to process incoming sensory information properly.

Symptoms of Autism
Difficulty in making eye contact
When a person with autism does not respond to a question / direction to which he has shown a previous correct response, it is considered that he is being labelled as stubborn / non-compliant / obnoxious.
Difficulty in communication
Poor in showing affection and do not respond to physical affection
Can't speak if they want to
Can't smile
Don't notice others and don't pick up cues from adults

Note - The issues above can be in a whole spectrum.

To regulate their behaviours they tend to seek extra sensory feedback using various sensory channels including. Such behaviours could be observed as -

1. Lying over the floor
2. Displaying poor hand skills
3. Poor walking patterns
4. Weak Hand Skills
5. Poor Listening skills
6. Weak ability to use language etc

Programmes for Children with Down Syndrome

The low muscle tone and loose ligaments at the joints associated with Down syndrome are real challenges to early motor development and occupational therapy can help your child meet those challenges.

Children with Down syndrome have low muscle tone, which affects their -

attention, behaviours and performance
